What are cookies?

Cookies are small data files which are downloaded onto your device as a result of you accessing online content. They allow your device to retain information about your browsing activity so as to optimise your online experience.

We use cookies and other related technology to make our website easier for you to use and to personalise your online browsing experience and our communications with you.

There are two general categories of cookies:

  • A session cookie only exists for the duration of your visit to a website. They recognise your computer or smartphone as you move between pages. These cookies can be used to remember things like your language preference, login information or what is in your shopping cart, so that you don’t need to re-enter this information every time you navigate between pages on the same website.
  • A persistent cookie stays on your device for a set period of time and can be used, for example, to remember you when you next visit the website.

The source of each cookie also varies. Some cookies are owned and created by Specsavers ('first-party' cookies), but others are supplied by independent companies, such as social media platforms ('third-party' cookies).

Cookies are NOT viruses, malware, programs or applications and they can't see the files on your computer.

How do we use cookies?

We use the following types of cookies when you visit our website.

Strictly Necessary Cookies

These cookies are necessary for the website to function and cannot be switched off in our systems. They are usually only set in response to actions made by you which amount to a request for services, such as setting your privacy preferences, logging in or filling in forms. You can set your browser to block or alert you about these cookies, but some parts of the site will not then work. These cookies do not store any personally identifiable information.

Functional Cookies

These cookies enable the website to provide enhanced functionality and personalisation. They may be set by us or by third-party providers whose services we have added to our pages. If you do not allow these cookies, then some or all of these services may not function properly.

Performance Cookies

These cookies allow us to count visits and traffic sources, so we can measure and improve the performance of our site. They help us to know which pages are the most and least popular and see how visitors move around our websites. These cookies do not store personal information, but are based on uniquely identifying your browser and internet device. If you do not allow these cookies, we will not know when you have visited our site.

Targeting Cookies

These cookies may be set through our site by our advertising partners. They may be used by those companies to build a profile of your interests and show you relevant advertisements on other sites. They do not store personal information, but are based on uniquely identifying your browser and internet device. If you do not allow these cookies, you will experience less targeted advertising.

What other tracking technology do we use?

In addition to cookies, we use other tracking technologies like pixels and APIs to understand how people interact with our website and how effective our online advertising is. We use pixels or transparent GIF files (small invisible images) provided by third-party advertising platforms, such as Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram to track which advertisements bring visitors to our site. When you click on one of our advertisements on a third-party website and visit our site, a pixel may place a cookie on your device. This helps us to see which advertisements are working best. We also use advertisers Conversions API (CAPI) which enables server-side tracking and allows us to send anonymised data, such as hashed contact details, gender and date of birth, directly to platforms. This helps us to measure ad performance and platform performance. All data sent via CAPI is hashed (scrambled) to protect your privacy and is not shared in plain test.

Google Analytics

Google Analytics helps us understand how visitors use our website. It collects information such as:

  • Pages visited
  • Time spent on site
  • Geographic location
  • Device and browser type
  • IP address

Google may process this data on servers outside of Australia. You can learn more by visiting Google’s Privacy Policy. You can opt out of tracking by; (i) adjusting your browser settings to block cookies; (ii) using browser extensions to disable analytics; or (iii) visiting Google’s opt-out page.

Advertising Platform Tracking

We use tracking technologies provided by various advertising platforms (such as Reddit, Meta and others) to help us understand how users interact with our website and how effective our advertising campaigns are. These technologies may collect information such as:

  • IP address
  • Browser and device information
  • Referrer URL
  • Hashed identifiers (e.g. name and email)
  • User interactions (e.g. page views, purchases)

This data may be processed by the advertising platforms and their partners and may be transferred to servers located outside Australia, including the United States. For more information, please refer to the privacy policies of the relevant platforms.

Managing your cookie preferences

You can change your preferences with respect to accepting cookies in your web browser’s settings. Many web browsers have a broad range of controls for managing cookies, including whether to accept all cookies, to block certain types of cookies and to block cookies from unrecognised websites.

You may change the settings on your web browser to block all cookies, however you should be aware that in doing so, our website will not work as smoothly as you are used to and some basic functionality that is dependent on accepting some cookies will not work at all.
